St Luke's College was the first Catholic secondary school to be built in the Pilbara. The project was a joint venture between the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia and the Ministry of Education WA.

The decision to build the Karratha Catholic Secondary School (as it was then known) was officially announced on 3 September 1986. The school opened with 92 students on 4 February 1987, operating from temporary premises until it was able to move to a permanent campus in October the following year.
