In May 2005, the school was renamed from Raymond Terrace High School to Hunter River High School. This change was made to reflect the geographically widespread and diverse communities the school serves, from Hexham in the south, to North Arm Cove in the north, and from Lemon Tree Passage in the east, to beyond Seaham in the west.
